First, I explore how `adolescence' as a time of transition that mimics the transition from primitiveness to civilization rests on an evolutionary understanding of development in time and how the separation of primitiveness and civilization in terms of time perpetuates colonialist understandings. This linkage of individual and collective development allows for the threat of degeneration to occupy our talk of `adolescent' development. Second, `adolescence' as a separable stage of human development assumes that the changes that young people undergo and the social phenomena observed among them are somehow different to those observed or occurring among the adults of that particular population.
