It is as if she is above the law as she steals a car, or masquerades as ‘Swingin’ Door Susie’ in order to elude the cops. She has a confidence that overcomes all that gets in her way, but with a childlike innocence in delighting in the situations she finds herself in, and relishing the moment with a naivety and essential goodness that alleviates any blame for her wrongdoings. She just wants what she knows should be hers, her playmate, David, although he is oblivious of his destiny. In this respect she demonstrates the feminine wiles that we see in other screwball heroines, such as Irene in My Man Godfrey and Jean in The Lady Eve.

MISS SWALLOW: Exactly. This … [gestures towards brontosaurus] … will be our child. Yes David, I see our marriage as purely a dedication to your work. These two scenes bookend the film, reinforcing the contrast between the two women: Miss Swallow and Susan Vance. The former is strict and disciplined in her appearance, movement and voice, whereas Susan is effusive and undisciplined, suggesting freedom and energy. Miss Swallow has her hair pulled back into a severe style, her clothes are dark and restrained, her jacket is buttoned up, and she wears glasses, creating a fiercely professional demeanour.
