We were repeatedly told how awful everybody was, that we were not to associate with them. Later, this would apply even to our own young friends, treasured teachers and, finally and most horribly, to our own deepest feelings and identities. The circle closed in ever tighter. More and more options and vistas were closed. Everything in this world seemed suspect, subversive and unworthy to my parents. How could their children, mere babies, ever hope to live up (or down) to their standards? In one way and one way only: death.
My terminal uniqueness and self-inflicted differentness always led to alienation, anger and disease. Being one among many was my protection against the insanity of the disease and my own bridling ego. My relief at being with others who felt as I felt and who had suffered as I had suffered was too great to indulge in the Great I Am. The alternative just wasn't worth it anymore. Slowly I recovered in the program. I still have the same sponsor who gave so willingly of himself that cold night in hell so long ago, my first encounter with a true, living bodhisattva.
Zen is, if anything, the biggest question of all. It is the question that becomes a wedge in the cracked shell of our true self, prying us open to a meaning and truth that will have relevance to ourselves alone. It is a dance and a tug-of-war with ourselves. It demands no belief in anything, and instead insists on a great doubt concerning everything we had heretofore taken for granted. While belief is not a requirement, faith most certainly is. Faith is the unspoken, nameless and formless yearning for completion and wholeness.
