The alternative economy is seen as simultaneously incapacitated and empowered by drugs. The media depict users as losers, but losers who are somehow always winning. Individual users are portrayed either as incompetent at work or as competent only for the purpose of disguising their drug use. They are condemned both for withdrawing from and remaining in the social world. Drug users are antisocial but are continually forging reprehensible social configurations. They are lawless, but at the same time subject to the law's most intimate scrutiny.

They could encourage the idealist notion that by changing the way perception is received and processed, an individual can actually change the world. " Some drugs may encourage a contemplative, aesthetic, or otherwise disinterested kind of perception that does not necessarily require the act of buying for its consummation. Or it may be that drugs are thought to skew the perceptual process so utterly that the purchase cannot be competently executed. In the case of cocaine—a drug that acts mainly upon the hydraulics of desire—it can be argued that desire for the drug itself supersedes all other desires, including the desire for acquiring material objects other than the drug itself.

The counterculture was a reassertion of the notion that every individual is a self-contained cosmos, and that the accidental contains the key to the universal. It believed in the progressive synthesis of historical dialectics, and in antique metanarratives like Love, World Peace, and Community. It rejected not only the memories, art, ethics, and politics of the previous generation, but its very consciousness, whatever it was that made hatred of the Other worth the price of extinction.
