I think that it must be explained, at least in part, by their predilection for a species of substantive social explanation, which they mistakenly believe to be uniquely consonant with political liberalism. e. e. 13 There is in fact one body of social doctrine, whose avatars include utilitarianism, liberal political theory and neo-classical economic theory, which does conform to individualistic prescriptions, on the assumption that what is in effect a generalized aggregation problem can be solved.
Thus most writers within this tradition have not found it difficult to show that some positivist assumption or rule is inapplicable to some or other area of social life. But they characteristically draw the wrong conclusions from this. In some cases, where it is just a matter of their extracting an anti-naturalist moral from a fundamentally correct point, the error is easily undone: by showing how the point can be accommodated within the more expansive, less restrictive account of science provided by transcendental realism.
