Equally, we might say that Making sense of nature is about ontology, but not in the classic philosophical sense of specifying what’s fundamentally ‘real’ and listing (in typically rarefied language) that ‘mind-independent’ reality’s signature characteristics. My interest, instead, is in what various representations of nature communicate to us. They shape what they ostensibly depict – including us – and are thus worthy of close scrutiny. I thus regard ‘nature’ as a particularly powerful fiction: it’s something made, and no less influential for being an artefact.

We consider ourselves to be part of nature, in two senses. Not only are we affected by and able to alter wider ecosystems; in addition we are, physiologically speaking, natural entities ourselves – in literary critic Paul Outka’s (2011: 31) memorable formulation, ‘a part of the earth that [has] learned to talk’. Homo sapiens is one of several hominid species that evolved, like all other organisms, through a very long-term process of ‘natural selection’. Notwithstanding our important differences from other primates and the wider world of living creatures, we’re all members of an extended biological family.

I’ll call them epistemic workers. Through face-to-face and virtual interaction, these workers form epistemic communities with more or less distinctive languages. As the semiologist Robert Scholes once said, ‘Both the sonnet and the medical prescription can be regarded as forms of discourse that are bound by rules which cover not only their verbal procedures but their social production and exchange’ (Scholes, 1982: 144). The boundaries between them and lay audiences are often permeable, such that ‘translation’ routinely occurs – for instance, the specialised vocabulary of professional meteorologists is daily simplified into short weather reports for public consumption.
