But at the same time, we should also note that, when greed runs wild, it can also cripple success. The events leading up to the 2008 meltdown clearly demonstrate that fact. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, greed was literally running wild, not so much in the streets perhaps, but on Wall Street certainly, and in many a corporate board room, such as at Enron, for example. S. ECONOMY Bank officials, hedge fund managers, mortgage brokers, and others were pocketing multi-million dollar bonuses even while wrecking their firms.

From that fact stem many other consequences that, for the most part, economists largely ignore. I have described these consequences in depth in my book, Postmodern Management (see note 3, p. 51). Let me summarize those consequences here. First, as noted, is the dysfunction of job defensiveness. Bureaucracies the world around, and quite apart from local cultural values, are job defensive, much more so than organic organizations. Second, and related to the first, job holders tend to suboptimize their jobs and departments, not the whole organization.

That is true regardless of whether the broader culture is group centered or focuses on individualism. Since World War II, many people fear the term “organic” because both fascists and communists used the term the “organic state” as an excuse to create a closed society that tyrannized individuals who disagreed with their policies. The individual was supposed to focus only on the state to which total loyalty was owed, and in preference to family, friends, or business ties. By that definition, one might even have applied the label to Japan before World War II.
