Chambers states that the lengths FC and AB are 15 parts and 3V3 parts respectively. If these dimensions are adopted, however, the volute does not flow into the eye in a continuous curve. 478:1. In order to produce the curve the diameter of the eye must be slightly reduced. The multiplicy of centres, moreover, introduces so much margin of variation that the drawing must be done with considerable accuracy if dimensions of eye and overall depth are to be achieved with a smooth transition from volute to eye.
Greek prototypes more often than not employ a triple division, but both Gibbs and Chambers reserve this more elaborate subdivision for the Corinthian, as the most decorative of the orders.
