A co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte – modelled after Charles Robert Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft in Britain – the Moravian-born Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was a pioneer of functional design. His early Art Nouveau belief in the unity of architecture, furniture, and decoration found him ultimately embracing a style that was stark, functional, and decidedly opposed to the florid, curvilinear Art Nouveau fashion promoted by his French contemporaries. Although Hoffmann’s first designs bore the fluid lines typical of French Art Nouveau, by 1900 he had fallen under the spell of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was widely admired in Vienna.

Severely rectilinear forms are commonplace in Moser’s furniture. Werkstätte with Josef Hoffmann, Moser designed furniture that was frequently embellished with stylized ornament, which flattered the otherwise severe rectilinear design. Koloman Moser (1868–1918) was the multitalented Austrian architect and designer of a broad range of decorative arts that included jewellery, metalwork, glass, and textiles. From the 1890s, he conceived furniture in severely geometric but refined rectilinear shapes that were richly decorated and far more colourful than much of the furniture being made by his Viennese contemporaries.
