Gender and Age Differences. This third general issue, discussed earlier, can be formulated as follows: Are there interactions between age and/or gender and culture? Put in other words, are the gender or age differences that can be expected on the basis of earlier research replicable in all cultunits included in our study? Given a presumed high degree of variation between countries as to gender roles and gender stereotypes, it sounds reasonable to expect an interaction of gender with culture in many variables.

First, the main interest is in distributions and mean scores. This is the type of results we are most used to, reporting how one national sample differs from others, for example, in terms of the mean importance of certain beliefs in each cultunit. Second, comparisons consist of testing whether certain Page 9 operationalizations of concepts mean the same thing to people in different countrieswhether they yield the same loading patterns in principal component analyses, whether they produce the same reliability coefficients, and so on.

How much cross-border permeability there is depends, however, on many factors. One of these factors is the degree of political and administrative centralization. In the case of Switzerland, for example, where the federal states have a high degree of autonomy, one expects more permeability across the borders than in countries with a high degree of centralization. The question is whether we can find these language borders in our analyses. Are the French adolescents and the French-Swiss adolescents more similar to one another than the French-Swiss adolescents to the German-Swiss adolescents?
