Among the hundreds of definitions of culture (Kroeber & Kluckhohn, 1952), many theorists (Adams & Markus, 2004; Shweder, 2003) developing sociocultural theory have returned to the insights of Kroeber and Kluckholn (1952): Culture consists of explicit and implicit patterns of historically derived and selected ideas and their embodiment in institutions, practices, and artifacts; cultural patterns may, on one hand, be considered as products of action, and on the other as conditioning elements of further action.
Some students, for example, may perform better when collaborating rather than when working independently, and changing the configuration of the classroom may be one possible route to improved performance. Yet if a relational way of being involves a complex of 23 attitudes, values, practices, activities, and behavioral orientations, changing behavior may require more than activating a interdependent mind-set or set of knowledge structures relevant to interdependence. At the same time, dimensionalists may fail to see how different situations could in fact prime different norms or values and produce changes in performance.
For each approach, this review focuses on its previous or prototypical, rather than prospective, contributions.
