Chapter 6 takes as its focus Foucault’s own somewhat incomplete response to his problematization of modernity as elaborated in varied writings from the last decade of his life.
Foucault’s conception of problematization, I then argue in the following section, provides a kind of master key for understanding Foucault’s methodology. In the final section of the chapter, I leverage this interpretation of Foucault as a problematizer toward a synoptic reading of Foucault’s work, showing how problematization is a critical focus throughout. This sets the stage for later chapters, where I explain in more 30 Genealogy as Critique detail both the methodological coherence of problematization as a critical practice and also how this notion enables us to reread the particulars of some of Foucault’s major works.
