The work of the Czech-born designer Paul Frankl (1886–1958) exemplifies a New World tradition – that of immigrant workers using skills learned in their country of origin to create something uniquely American. A sophisticated architect, Frankl arrived in the United States in 1914 and fell in love with New York City and the “modern living” it offered. 48).
