I left that congregation to go to seminary, to answer God's call and to really be myself. I did not realize the day I arrived in Dallas that my call was an unfinished story. It had only begun, for it would be within the walls of the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University that I would hear God's call to quit lying to myself and others. I would finally come out, at least to a few close friends, as a gay Christian man. It would be (and still is) painful, but it was the most liberating step I have ever taken in my life.
