The endangered reputations of the people related to a hermaphrodite may also have been a reason many hermaphrodites were left alone. This was true for parents and family, as we saw above, but it affected intimate friends and spouses even more. In a world where, outside marriage, physical intimacies were very much restricted to one’s own sex, the discovery of an inappropriate or doubtful sex could – in hindsight – put all sorts of seemingly everyday situations in an immoral or indecent light. Disclosing someone else’s sexual ambiguity to religious, legal or medical authorities could therefore severely affect one’s own honour.
There is one case, described in 1856, that might provide the key to this. , Maria Oh. was surprised to find herself pregnant.
