I was the centrepiece. Other coppers were always buzzing around me—and I must admit, I liked it. In the months beforehand I’d been involved in a few operations that were yet to run their course, but it was no secret around the office that I was after bigger and better challenges. This early on in the piece, I wasn’t sure where Patty Condro and his five pounds of grass would take me, but you never know your luck—the smallest lead can sometimes find you in the least likely places. The next morning the crew set off in two vehicles, one a standard unmarked Crime Squad number, the other a hire car.

The deal was set for Friday at the Lake Boga car park. Two pounds of cannabis, one ounce of amphetamines. Operation Bert was gathering pace.
