Seneca Terms, Orientations, Agendas IN MY READINGS of literary, paraliterary, and cinematic texts I am primarily concerned with the ways in which gay men assume representational agency to articulate deliberately "deviant" or contestatory subjectivities. I offer these essays, however, neither as a genealogy of a monolithic "gay male subject," nor as an archeological recovery of a ''gay self" heretofore occluded within heterosexist intellectual history.
The "alliance" between gay men and heterosexual men figured in these texts is, first of all, counterempirical, given the tendency of this type of heterosexual man to harass, assault, and even kill gay men for being gay. Secondly, this rhetorical strategy not only elides the murderous rage the dominant heterosexual male expresses toward the gay male, but it obscures the intimate relation between this rage and a profound contempt for women. 10 Marilyn Frye's essay requires a more nuanced engagement and response than similar passages in Irigaray, as Frye's theses stem from and are addressed to a specific moment in gay and lesbian political history in the late 1970s in the United States.
