The rise of concern about drug use and, in particular, alarm at the prospect of the ‘proselytizing’ heroin user coincided with the development, both in Britain and elsewhere, of a distinctive youth culture. This culture, with its characteristic fashions of dress, music, ideology and behaviour, has been closely involved with both the initial and the continued use of illicit drugs.
The encouraging decline in the prevalence of smoking has been accompanied by a fall in the average weekly cigarette consumption of young males who continue to smoke. Amongst males in the age group 16–19 this fell from 102 cigarettes per week in 1972 to eighty-four cigarettes per week in 1988. This decline contrasted with a slight increase in the weekly number of cigarettes smoked by young female smokers (from seventy-six to seventynine). In addition, older male smokers also slightly increased their cigarette consumption between 1972 and 1988.
