Forensic authorities figured that the tree had only partially fallen, when its branches caught in the branches of another tree, causing it to hang suspended over the driveway. There is no more classic example of a widowmaker than that. But my brother-in-law clearly didn’t know that, or else he would have never considered walking under that giant wooden sword of Damocles to fetch his tractor. No one knows why he didn’t hear the tree suddenly let loose in a gust of wind. Or why, if he did, that he didn’t get clear—trees do not fall silently, or with the velocity of a dodge ball.

If your saw was designed to operate a 14-inch bar, don’t fit it with a 16-inch bar. Likewise, it detracts from the ability of your saw to fit it with a smaller bar and chain than it was designed to use. That said, a shorter bar is easier to handle. It’s less likely to kick back uncontrollably—partly because shorter bars are found on less powerful saws. That works out, so long as a sawyer’s ego doesn’t override sensibility and capability. You’ll know when it’s time to step up, and the sometimes hard-won information on these pages can help to quicken that process.

That dilemma is as much a part of the job as keeping oil in a saw's chain oiler, and it's going to happen to you in an almost uncountable number of ways. Getting a bar pinched isn't serious in itself, but getting it free requires a bit of finesse or it's very possible to completely ruin both the bar and chain—and even to wreck the chainsaw entirely. If you rev-up your chainsaw and its chain refuses to move—the engine just gives out with a low, trombone-like moan—shut down the machine immediately.
