All of these problems can be rolled together to constitute a gigantic threat to the social, economic and environmental sustainability of our world and our society and, perhaps, even our survival. How we practice agriculture is at the heart of the overall problem. The simplest way of thinking about this problem is that land degradation leads to poverty, and that poverty leads to land degradation, creating a downward spiral from which it is hard to escape, especially if you are a poor farmer in the tropics and subtropics, unable to invest in the inputs needed to increase productivity.
