Experiences that several gay men and lesbian women have i n common are discrimination and violence. D' Augelli ( 1 992) described undergraduates' experi­ ences of verbal insults and physical violence; few students reported victimization to the authorities; the most frequent victimizers were other students. Herek et al. ( 1 997) showed that what they call ' hate crime victimization' was experienced by almost half of their sample and had almost exclusively been perpetrated by men. Having had these experiences was related to higher levels of depression, anxiety, anger and symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

In studies with descriptive aims, it becomes unclear to what extent percentages and proportions are accurate reflections of larger groups of gays and lesbians. Studies might give both deflated as well as inflated images of reality. From a strategic perspective, it might be helpful to have inflated figures when problems are to be exposed. 3o It is quite likely that the same qualification applies to studies that aim at exploring relationships between variables or testing hypotheses. A practical solution to solve the issue of representativeness is to apply large, general sample frames, and to screen for individuals with homosexual behaviour, interests or self-identification.
