What have the above research techniques begun to unearth that we should put so much valuable time and effort into them? What we know already about the way successful students learn to learn In order to try to convince you that the effort is worthwhile, what follows is a brief summary about strategy use and strategy training for which there is a growing body of evidence. This evidence is supported by the two studies described in detail in this book. We will be examining these studies in Chapters 3,4 and 5.

In case readers are thinking I am smugly criticizing other researchers, let me provide a similar problem encountered with a simple questionnaire used in the Lingua project (see Macaro 2000). This was with students in Italy and England who were about 14 years of age. Here the statement was: When I don't understand I ask the teacher to clarify or repeat things.

But aren't these effective strategy users simply the more motivated ones? 5 This is not surprising when we consider that strategy use is an effortful process. Thus it would seem intuitive that more motivated learners are likely to put in the time and effort required of consistent strategy application, especially when considering strategies which are more at the conscious and controlled end of the continuum. Conversely, it may take a great deal of conscious effort and motivation to deconstruct and modify the more automatic strategies which, when evaluated, prove to be ineffective.
