So we were not just looking at how the Japanese community saw school, but we thought that by seeing what the Japanese thought was odd about our school system we could question some of our assumptions. ' 1 looks at these issues in more detail. Main Dissonances Identified by the Research In this chapter, the focus is on our findings relating to dissonance. It is important not to think that everything about British school is odd or unexpected or difficult for Japanese children. Many aspects fitted in very well with their understanding of what school should be like.

They were less concerned with detail but seemed more interested in eliciting a concise story which was a cohesive sequence of several experiences, a form of narrative which, according to the authors of the study, is particularly valued in Japanese culture. Another particularly interesting contrast in Minami and McCabe's findings was the fact that mothers in Japan discouraged the children from telling them things they already knew, while the American mothers actively encouraged this. It is not my intention to present a stereotype here, and it is important to emphasise that maternal, or parental, behaviour varies extensively within, as well as between cultures.
