When such organizations eventually self-destruct, as most do, and the stress carriers are later asked why they got out of the business, they most frequently lament that they just couldn't find good help. There are severe disadvantages to the authoritarian-moral approach Page 19 to professional distress. The focus on the character of the distressed worker camouflages the need to modify the high-stress environment in general and the leadership style in particular. This approach does nothing to eliminate those organizational conditions that will continue to produce a high rate of professional distress.

The problem is seen as emerging from the personality of the worker (diagnosis of psychopathology). The worker becomes a problem (identified patient) about which something must be done. The supervisor confronts the worker on his or her current level of functioning and recommends that the worker seek help outside the agency, or turns the supervisory relationship into a counseling relationship (psychological therapy). If the worker's behavior does not change, he or she is fired or manipulated out of the organization (the equivalent of institutionalizing the adolescent).

While such experiences cannot be prevented, it is possible to develop both personal and organizational strategies that prevent the extreme casualty process caused by prolonged professional distress. We can develop strategies that can decrease the frequency and duration of these episodes in our professional lives. The early stages of distress may be inevitable, but we can take responsibility for and control of our organizational structures and group processes to reduce the growing number of distress-related personal casualties in our work environments.
