20 This is especially the case with academic disciplines, which seek to police the boundaries of what constitute legitimate and illegitimate readings of texts by instantiating and transmitting "proper" methods of reading. Vital, then, to an understanding of one's own (academic) disciplinary practices is an interrogation of the rules and procedures whereby textual meaning is produced. The historical positioning of the reader as a subject effect in excess of an academic discipline must also be investigated.

This made it possible for me to avoid what I would characterize as the "cut and paste" method of scholarship, in which the critic wrenches a wide variety of critical and theoretical propositions from the contexts in which they initially circulated and strings them together as a demonstration of an alleged breadth of knowledge. Rather, I was interested in these chapters in carefully working through a limited number of texts, texts that I found either challenging or illuminating or particularly pertinent to my argument, or significantly underread or misread.

Ideology thus interrupts the ethical, flagging the ways in which the economic text might complicate our understanding of ethics in ways we cannot adequately know, given our placement in that text, as well as the limits of that textual mapping we name the economic. In other words, in pointing toward the economic, I am not reverting to a mechanistic account of causality that understands the material as the base that produces all superstructural phenomena, but am instead using the term ideology to hold the place specifically of the effects of the economic, with the understanding that even such a limited account of causality must insist on the economic itself as a mapping, an attempt to name inadequately a series of forces that, given the limits of knowledge, can never be adequately named or known.
