There had, however, been a very tricky period in the months immediately following the coup, in the summer of 1992. SL, as described earlier, were concentrating their efforts overwhelmingly on Lima and, with business people and the middle classes alarmed by giant bombs in the heart of the business district in Miraflores, there was a serious risk of a collapse of government, probably accompanied by a military coup, or possibly by an SL seizure of power like those in Cuba in 1959 and Nicaragua in 1978.
The absence of a telephone aroused their suspicion and they also noticed that the curtains of the upstairs rooms were kept permanently drawn, day and night.
