The South had found its new cash crop, causing slavery and cotton to become linked in American history. That same year boasted another significant mile marker concerning American slavery. With the northern states either banning slavery immediately or creating processes for its gradual elimination, southern slaves looked to the North as a place of refuge.
The move to another fort did not come for at least two years, however. During that time, Scott worked for his master, at first in the fort’s hospital. Emerson found the hospital unsanitary, though, and requested permission to remove his patients into temporary tent shelters, until a new medical room could be built. He put Dred to work erecting the tents. When Emerson bought some local land outside the fort in the nearby town of Bettendorf, Iowa, he had Dred take up residence there to build a cabin on the new property.
