Were we planning to move? Didn't we want to be closer to our families who could help with the baby? "I began to see myself in a different way, too," Cynthia said. "Before, I loved the life we'd made in Washington. The town itself was quiet and clean. The sense of community was strong, and I felt blessed to be part of it. We didn't have much in the way of possessions, and we didn't really miss them on a day-to-day basis. "But suddenly I found myself thinking, What are you doing with your life? My sister had her doctorate and was already publishing articles in academic journals.

Page 27 When Cynthia married Tom, she felt pulled in two directions. She hadn't realized until then how different the life Tom wanted was from that of her family. Her family had lived in New York since the 1850s, building careers in public service: the ministry, education, social work, and municipal government. Like her grandmother, she had earned a degree in early childhood education.

Special thanks to Candice Fuhrman, my agent, who believed in this project from the beginning, and whose guidance and tenacity helped make it happen, and to my editor, Rebecca Post, for her enthusiasm and her insistence that this book be as clear as possible. And I would like to recognize Dr. Steven Wolin, whose pioneering work in resilience helped stimulate me in the formation of these concepts. I would also like to acknowledge my father, Patrick O'Gorman, for his belief that I could be all that I aspired to; Wayne Kritsberg, who encouraged me to begin this effort; Peter and Sarah Dallas; Lynn MacPhearson; Leslie Boyd; Lisa Dobson; Carl Mindell; Lynn Peseckis; Naureen and Janel Perkins; and my women's breakfast group: Joanne Dobson, Miriam Duhan, Joan Bloomberg, Barbara Nagler, Liz Wilen-Berg, and Rebecca McBride, for their ongoing nurturing and comments on the manuscript.
