The distinction is found within workers’ associations and in management practice, and as industry expands it is managers who decide what does and does not constitute a skill, and how it should be remunerated. Despite the problematic character of the terms, I shall use them as a shorthand for a distinction which is central in the following analysis, not least in the difficult questions about the construction of class identity. There were two main categories of people recruited to the factories of Sesto.

The fascist reaction began with the brutal killing of left-wing activists in Sesto. Under fascism there continued to exist a militant communist underground, while the partisan organisations during the later stages 26 Pratt 01 chaps 18/11/02 17:03 Page 27 Northern Italy: ‘A World to Win’ 27 of the Second World War earned Sesto the epithet of ‘Italy’s Stalingrad’. The Communist Party emerged as the dominant political force in the decades after 1945. I have chosen to start the case studies with Sesto because it is precisely the kind of place where we would expect class politics to emerge: a major industrial centre with a concentration of factory workers, a place which developed enduring and evolving forms of class action.

It was the proletariat, sometimes quite narrowly defined as totally propertyless wage-labourers in industry, who would make the revolution. They represented the new phenomenon created by capitalism, and they alone were detached from any of the economic or cultural forms characteristic of earlier modes of production. As a result they would also be immune to bourgeois and reformist political organisations, like craft unions, co-operatives or parliamentary democracy. This was a highly deterministic analysis: a very direct relationship was posited between social being and social consciousness.
