70 Even within the Native community, racial and class intolerance was often evident. Equally important, the issue was picked up by the popular press and carried into the political arena. 54 Among other things, his address kindled a response by Major Peaker and the Council of Yorkton who interviewed three provincial cabinet ministers on the matter. 55 It concerned the trial of a thirteen-year-old Metis child who had been arrested for break-and-enter and theft of a horse and buggy. Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to an indefinite term in the Moosomin industrial school.
The earliest stirring in the Department of Education occurred in 1939. In October, Mr. L. 69 By implication, these preliminary findings called for a provincewide investigation of the educational facilities available to Metis children, but no such survey was conducted until almost three years later.
