Equally important, the issue was picked up by the popular press and carried into the political arena. 54 Among other things, his address kindled a response by Major Peaker and the Council of Yorkton who interviewed three provincial cabinet ministers on the matter. 55 It concerned the trial of a thirteen-year-old Metis child who had been arrested for break-and-enter and theft of a horse and buggy. Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to an indefinite term in the Moosomin industrial school.
The earliest stirring in the Department of Education occurred in 1939.
