Such a concept was not included in their courses of study when they first trained. Most in-service training is prompted by changes in regulation and law that must be absorbed rather than genuine broadening and deepening of the arts of teaching. These three reasons do not stand apart from each other. They are closely interrelated. If you set out to solve one, you will inevitably be touching upon areas of knowledge and practice that are relevant to the other two. In fact, the best way to solve them is to tackle them as a whole.

They can be obtained anywhere in our information rich society – and are often better sought for in more conducive conditions than can be afforded by some museums. This is not to deny that facts can and should be sought out at such venues. Some can only be found there and getting pupils to design their own investigations to discover these facts is of inestimable value. However, finding facts should never be the sole or main reason for visiting a museum. The problem is, as Bertrand Russell wrote, ‘We know too much and feel too little’.

This is true for teacher and pupils alike. Disorientation can occur even in well signposted environments. Toilets are in the wrong place, doors open the wrong way, the decor is different, the smells are unusual and there are strangers about. Pupils can get lost even if the building they are in is smaller than their school. They can even get ‘lost’ when they are not separated from the group. The learning environment is also different. Even if teacher and pupils worked in a replica of their own classroom, psychologically it would be a very different experience.
