The low intensity band is less prominent in the elderly and therefore its absence in this age group may not necessarily signify tumour infiltration. The importance of myometrial invasion in relation to the prognosis of cervical cancer is wellknown (Prempree et al. 1982), although it is not included in the FIGO staging classification. A sagittal 7 2-weighted image can reveal the extent of tumour invasion into the myometrium which may not be apparent at the time of an examination under anaesthesia.
