Measurements of FSH and estradiol levels during menses for 3 months will often assist the physician in gauging the permanency of the ovarian failure. One cause of premature ovarian failure is genetic abnormality in the sex chromosomes. Although most of these patients have ovarian failure before puberty, some will have a few years of normal menstrual function and then cease to menstruate.
