Infinity includes a brand new foreword through Harvard professor Barry Mazur.

"Another very good ebook for the lay reader of mathematics…In explaining [infinity], the writer introduces the reader to a superb many different mathematical phrases and ideas that appear unintelligible in a proper textual content yet are less ambitious whilst offered within the author's person and extremely readable style."—Library Journal

PSE, and its shape, when not looked at in perspective (as in Fig. ) ~ The ellipse, as you probably know, is a very important curve, being, among other things, the path in which a planet goes around the sun. * Now imagine that the base of the cone is pushed lower and lower (without changing the position of B) and APPROACHES INFINITY, so that the cone is now "open" at the bottom, like this: "According to the Einstein Theory of Relativity the path of a planet is NOT EXACTLY an ellipse a fact especially noticeable in the case of the planet Mercury.

Now, you can cut such a cone in various ways: (1) by a cut which is perpendicular to AB at any point of AB: such a "section" will always be a CIRCLE, though it will vary in size, getting smaller as you come nearer to B, as shown in Fig. 1 on p. 41. (Of course if you cut right through B, the circle will have 40 Figure 1 I I -- ----.. e. NOT perpendicular to AB, as in Figure 2 on p. 41. Such a "section", CD, is an ELL!
