First, no one word appears in these texts that translates conclusively as homosexuality. 15 The RSV (first edition in 1946, 1952) uses the term homosexuality in 1 Corinthians 6:9, but the second edition in 1972 drops it, apparently because of the changing climate in North America toward homosexuality. The seven biblical texts clearly speak of same-sex genital relations. Since only in modern times has the concept of “sexual orientation/identity” arisen,16 we must remember that the biblical teaching speaks to behavior—same-sex genital acts.
27) and plan¯e (v. 27). He contends that all these focus on unrestrained lusts of various sexual desires, of whatever kind, that have mastered a person. 13 Without doubt, Fredrickson has identified a key emphasis of the text, and it is true that many Greek writers, and even the Old Testament, would agree that burning passion is the cause of moral downfall. But, as with Boswell, this interpretation dodges the clear appropriation of this passion to the homoerotic expression. Nothing in this text is said of unrestrained passions in heterosexual relations, even though the general New Testament word porneia would include it.
David E. Fredrickson examines the Romans text from the context of both Jewish and Gentile cultures to observe just what precisely it is that is condemned in sexual relationships, homosexual and/or heterosexual. He proposes that the deviance and sin that stirs God’s wrath, or, to use modern language, is inappropriate, is failure to control sexual passion. Thus in Romans 1 he zeroes in on such terms as epithymia (v. 24), pathos (v. 26), ekkaio (v. 27), orexis (v. 27) and plan¯e (v. 27). He contends that all these focus on unrestrained lusts of various sexual desires, of whatever kind, that have mastered a person.
