In order to explain the relationship between nature and the social processes that largely determine the type and extent of risk to individuals or groups, an analytical framework is here formulated that stresses the social construction of nature and risk. This framework is a critique of the false separation of hazards from the human domain, a view characterized by a technocratic-systematic approach to the environment.
