Ultimately the effects of language teachingand other sources of perceptions of France and French peopleon pupils' perceptions and attitudes might throw some light on motivation and attainment in language learning, although statistically achievement in French was not significantly related to semantic differential score (see Chapter 3). The 'attitudes' approach will be treated in Chapter 3. The 'case-study' approach In view of our intention to link the analysis of pupils' perceptions (and attitudes) with the observation of their experience of French lessons, it was necessary to analyse the 'combined' knowledge of a class on the full range of issues raised in interview.
Thus for example pupils were categorised in terms of socioeconomic status, location of their homes, experience of visits to foreign countries and being related to people speaking languages other than English. Such categories could be quantified as potential sources of influence on pupils' attitudes, but the significance of some of these sources was also explored qualitatively in interviews. 1. This combination of techniques was designed to be used in case-studies. It was decided that two secondary schools would be chosen.
